Thousands Not Billions

This is the distillation for laymen of the technical report of the eight year research project by the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) entitled Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth (RATE).  With only 11 chapters and approximately 150 pages of core content, this volume avails important information regarding careful, scholarly research that specifically deals with the age of the earth and argues from the scientific data that the age of the earth can just as easily, if not more accurately, be interpreted in terms of thousands of years and not millions or billions as alleged by uniformitarianists.  Though this version is intended for the lay reader, it still contains some technical information.  It does not attempt to address evolutionary dogma, but rather is dedicated to the study of the age of the earth.  It presents current, advanced scientific research that exhibits a compelling case for interpreting various radioisotope dating data points in terms of a young earth.  It does dedicate a chapter to “a proper reading of Genesis 1:1-2:3,” which demonstrates its position as a six day literal understanding of creation according to a normal literal interpretation of Scripture.  A recommended resource that is helpful, especially for the intermediate to serious cosmology student.

The Evolution Handbook

This is a large book of 978 pages that presents a massive volume of information intended to refute Darwinian evolution and argue for a literal understanding of Genesis.  It is a polemic volume written by Seventh-day Adventist and Spirit of Prophecy author, Vance Ferrell. The book is a low-cost production containing a reported 3,000 scientific facts, along with illustrations, historical explanations, and 1,352 quotations primarily from evolutionists. It is an abridgement of a three-volume set containing 1,362 pages. The unabridged contents of the three-volume set are freely available at evolution-facts.org. Some of the arguments used against Darwinian evolution include statements or arguments from evolutionists. Though the formatting is somewhat cumbersome, the content of the volume is quite accessible.  It presents concise statements and supposed facts in understandable language.  One of its strengths is its sheer quantity of quotations and citations.  Most of the arguments are based upon scientific discovery or criticism.  There are several references to Scripture that demonstrate a literal understanding of a six day creation only thousands of years ago.  It is intended for entry level students of cosmology.

It should be noted, however, that this volume has received considerable and legitimate criticism due to its lack of credibility. Some of the arguments or statements advanced in this volume are either taken out of context, outdated, or have since been retracted by the evolutionary community and should therefore be avoided. Where there is commentary, it is mostly non-technical, non-scientific, and often polemical. There are better resources available that more reliably offer current and accurate information, and that reason with the scientific data. Use of this work requires cross-referencing, double-checking, or otherwise further investigating the arguments presented.

Evolution Exposed

This is a helpful tool for dealing with the most contemporary issues related to the evolution versus creation debate.  This 304 page book is very well documented, reflecting principles of sound research and careful argumentation.  Though clearly coming from a literal biblical perspective, this volume does a fine job of defining terms, explaining otherwise complex concepts, and applying objective scientific principles to the questions at hand.  The book is quite systematic in its approach to compare and contrast what current science textbooks state, what current scientific research reveals (“what we really know about…”), and what questions the reader should consider.  References to other helpful tools are frequently listed as well as articles of further study on most any particular field of study considered.  The book is equipped with an accessible glossary, a chapter and unit review per textbook, an index of articles, and a general topical index.  It is very readable and accessible to the non-technical reader, yet is built upon careful research.  A helpful and recommended resource for the student of cosmology interested in arguments from science that refute evolutionary dogma and demonstrate compatibility with a literal understanding of the Bible.

Refuting Evolution 2

A well written sequel to Refuting Evolution that impressively and powerfully refutes Darwinian evolutionary dogma.  The layout of this volume is systematic and crisp.  It flows logically and is very readable.  It is broken down into three units which effectively repudiate crucial strong-holds that evolutionists claim: (1) evolution is science, (2) evolution is well supported by the evidence, and (3) “problems” with evolution are illusory.  Each of these categories of discussion are handled with precision and care.  As with the previous volume, this work is very accessible (non-technical) and still quite useful for even some of the more challenging issues.  It contains a helpful appendix that demonstrates a carefully conservative approach to disputing evolution with a high view of Scripture and an evident commitment to sound science.  The author maintains a literal six day creation view as presented in Genesis.  A helpful resource that is recommended for all.

Refuting Evolution

This is small but capable work that presents a critique of current theories of evolution.  It is intended to provide a scholarly response to the publication put forth by the National Academy of Science (NAS) entitled Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science.  Sarfati skillfully leverages quotations presented by evolutionists and refutes their claims by arguing conservatively from science.  One of the strengths of this volume is that it capably covers a wide variety of topics in an effective yet concise manner.  It addresses the presuppositional nature of interpretation and deals with the perceived conflict or incompatibility between science and religion.  Though the vast majority of its arguments are framed from a sound scientific basis, it is not overly technical.  The author maintains a literal six day creation view as presented in Genesis.  A helpful resource that is recommended for all.

Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth (Vol II)

Whereas the first volume dealt more particularly with a review of radioisotope dating methods, experimental data results and conclusions for distributions and considerations of accelerated nuclear decay, the second volume focuses more on results of empirical experimental examination.  Isochron dating, fission tracks, and further evidence of accelerated nuclear decay is presented.  As with volume 1, this work represents valuable, scholarly scientific research that is categorically more technical in nature.  There are fewer references to Scripture and fewer arguments framed from Scripture in this volume.  It too is recommended only for the advanced student of cosmology.

Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth

This is the first of two publications serving as the public report of technical data for the eight year research project by the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) entitled Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth (RATE).  This first volume contains over 467 pages of core content.  This volume avails important information regarding careful, scholarly research that specifically deals with the age of the earth and argues from the scientific data that the age of the earth can just as easily, if not more accurately, be interpreted in terms of thousands of years and not millions or billions as alleged by uniformitarianists.  The book occasionally refers to the “evolutionary” view, wherein it is referring to the “uniformitarian” view.  This volume is technical in nature, dealing with a detailed scientific analysis.  It does not attempt to address Darwinian biological evolution, but rather is dedicated to the study of the age of the earth from both a scientific and a biblical analysis.  It presents current, advanced scientific research that exhibits a compelling case for interpreting various radioisotope dating data points in terms of a young earth.  One of the critical hypotheses that it puts forth is accelerated nuclear decay as a scientific explanation for observable phenomena found within various specimens (i.e. radio halos).  The volume does present a considerable amount of biblical information and exegetical considerations.  It consistently demonstrates a six day literal understanding of creation according to a normal literal interpretation of Genesis.  A valuable resource, whose helpfulness may be limited to the advanced cosmology student.

Darwin on Trial

Another important work from a secular platform that challenges the theory of evolution on the basis of modern scientific evidence and careful scientific scrutiny.  Though modern science is certainly employed to pose the strongest arguments against the theory of evolution, this work is not a scientific study.  It is authored by a law professor who presents persuasive arguments and impressive research that leverages the statements of scientists and related historical documentation.  As with other “intelligent design” material, this volume does not argue for a biblical view, nor does it purpose an authority in the matter, it simply raises objections to the propagation of the theory of evolution on the basis of secular observation.  A useful resource to consider, yet it should be noted that it is devoid of any biblical consideration and is limited in its technical credibility.

Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds

A distilled version of several topics related to previous anti-Darwinian works.  This volume appeals more to socialism, moralism, and a vague mention of Christianity than science.  It includes arguments from social development and historical observations as well as from an appeal to religion.  It explicitly appeals to intelligent design (ID) and argues against modernism.  The book concludes by suggesting reconciliation between science and religion—specifically, yet very discretely: Christianity.  It should be noted that this work does not argue for six day creation, nor does it oppose uniformitarianism, nor does frame its arguments from Scripture.  A potentially useful resource for introductory inquiry.

The Face That Demonstrates The Farce of Evolution

An introductory level book that does a good job of effectively explaining other works that are more technical in nature.  Additionally, this volume provides some useful background information and social and moral implications related to the theory of evolution.  It has a Scripture index and an epilogue that is evangelistic in appeal.  Neither technical nor biblically thorough; it may be helpful as an introductory resource.
